Nothing Can Bring Back Our Daughter, But We Must Ban Assault Weapons to Protect Other Families

On Feb. 14, 2018, our daughter Jaime Guttenberg was murdered in the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. She was 14 years old. In the aftermath of that horrific day, we have dedicated our lives to fighting for stricter gun laws that will prevent other families from experiencing the unfathomable pain that we have endured. We believe that banning assault weapons is a critical step in reducing gun violence in America. These weapons are designed for one purpose only: to kill as many people as possible as quickly as possible. They have no place in our society. Assault weapons were used in some of the deadliest mass shootings in recent history, including the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the Las Vegas shooting, and the Parkland shooting. These weapons are not used for self-defense or hunting. They are used to inflict mass casualties. We know that banning assault weapons will not eliminate all gun violence. But it will save lives. A study by the RAND Corporation found that a ban on assault weapons would reduce mass shootings by 31%. It is time for our elected officials to take action and pass a ban on assault weapons. We cannot afford to wait any longer. Every day that we fail to act, more innocent people are killed by these weapons of war. We urge you to contact your representatives and demand that they support a ban on assault weapons. We cannot bring Jaime back, but we can work to prevent other families from experiencing the same heartbreak that we have. Please join us in the fight to ban assault weapons and save lives..
